William Paul Mason was born on April 12, 1947. He enlisted in the US Army and served as a combat medic with HHC of the 173rd Airborne Brigade until the armored personnel carrier he was riding in was hit with a rocket on March 4, 1968.

“Doc” Mason earned the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Mason was remembered by Frank Barito on the Vietnam Memorial Fund page: “Billy was my next door neighbor when I was growing up in Orchard Park NY. My father passed when I was an infant and Billy made the time to play all the sports with me in the backyard. I cherished every moment we spent throwing a baseball or catching a football . On occasion he would give me a worn out baseball glove or used helmet. It meant the world to me . My last memory of Billy was on Christmas when he visited my mom and me. He was dressed in his uniform and looked magnificent. He was so proud and I’ll never forget that day. He died a hero and will always be a hero to me.”

William is buried at Whitemarsh Memorial Cemetery in Propectville, PA.
