About Us | Horsham Preservation & Historical Association

Horsham is an area rich in history going back to our colonial period. The c1721 National Historic Landmark Sir William Keith House/Graeme Park, the Horsham Friends Meeting House (National Register), the c1735 Kenderdine Mill (National Register, and, the c1721 Penrose-Strawbridge House (restoration by HPHA) are only some of our many historical treasures.

The Horsham Preservation & Historic Association (HPHA) is is a community benefit organization dedicated to identifying, studying, preserving and protecting the historical heritage, buildings and artifacts of our area.

This photo shows the front exterior of the restored Penrose-Strawbridge House, a large, white three-story structure with yellow shutters on all windows. A long covered porch with columns runs across the first floor, furnished with several wicker chairs and a rocking chair. An American flag hangs from a pole on the porch. A small white sign above the porch entrance reads Horsham Preservation & Historical Association. Tree branches with green leaves hang down in the foreground and around the building, partially obscuring the upper floors and roof. The building is set against a backdrop of green trees.

Our Founders

HPHA was founded in 1997 by Margaret and Peter Choate. Margaret passed away April 5, 2017. Pete died January 13, 2025. Pete and Margaret are shown below horsing around on the statue marking the grave of Welsh Strawbridge’s favorite steeplechaser, River Breeze. The Penrose-Strawbridge House is behind them.

An outdoor photograph showing pete and margaret choate posing with a dark bronze horse statue in a grassy field. Margaret, with short brown hair and wearing a lavender long-sleeved shirt and dark blue jeans, stands smiling next to the horse, resting her hand on Pete's knee. Pete, wearing glasses, a green polo shirt, and khaki pants, sits on the horse's back, looking at the camera. The statue depicts a horse in mid-stride, with its front legs raised. They are situated on a patch of light-colored gravel. In the background, there is a large, white three-story stone building with yellow shutters (Penrose-Strawbridge House), along with a smaller red stone building and several large trees under an overcast sky.

The Choates had restored an old farmhouse in Horsham and their interest in history and restoration led them to create an organization of people interested in the history of the area, many of whom owned older homes.

In 2002, the Choates and HPHA turned their attention to the c1721 Penrose Strawbridge House that Horsham Township had acquired following the death of Mrs Strawbridge. HPHA entered into a lease with the township to restore the buildings on this farm and in 2002 Margaret and Pete officially retired from their business and became full time caretakers and restorers of this property. HPHA is now headquartered here.
